Lock Screen Magazine Unlock / Theme Change

Huawei P9 Lock Screen

Whilst there doesn't appear to be a menu to disable the magazine display, an alternative way to get around this was achieved by downloading an alternative theme, during the process you are asked whether you want to keep magazine lock enabled or whether you want to discard it.

This can be changed later from the settings:

Settings
> Screen lock and passwords
> Screen lock style

Select Magazine unlock or any other screen lock style that you may have downloaded.

One Hand UI Setting

To reduce the P9’s 5.2-inch display for one hand use,

Settings
> Smart assistance
> One-hand UI
> Mini Screen View

Exit and swipe left or right on navigation bar (bottom of phone) to enter one hand UI mode.

Motion Draw

Huawei P9 Motion Draw

One of the most odd features built into the P9 is the ability to launch an app by tapping the screen with your knuckle and drawing a letter. This unique app launching feature is limited to the letters c, e, m and w which means you’ll only be able to open four unique apps.

To turn the feature on and set up which apps you want to use, go to:

Settings
> Smart assistance
> Motion control
> Draw

Switch on and assign apps as desired.

Home Screen Search

Huawei P9 Home Screen Search

Swipe down on the home screen (not from top edge as this will show notifications and shortcuts) and a search windows will appear. From here you can search for any application that’s installed on the phone. But that’s not all: the search functionality also indexes all your contacts, music, videos and calendar entries. It can even search Google Docs files.

Power Saving Options

Enable ROG Power Saving

Protected Apps
You can also adjust whether apps continue to run after the screen is turned off.

Other functions also allow you to manage power in this menu section.

Restricting Background App Data Usage

Huawei P9 Background App Usage Restriction

There are a lot of apps which run in the background, but sometimes those apps use a huge amount of your monthly data allowance without you knowing.
If you want to cut an app off from using background data, go to:

Settings > Data traffic management > Networked apps.

Setup any restrictions as required. Keep in mind, cutting an app off from using background data will probably restrict the app from receiving push notifications.
